VICHADA: DESTINATION OF THE DAZZLING AND TORRENTIUS ORINOCO RIVER

Vichada is a province that encompasses the Colombian plains until they reach the Orinoco river. It is a privileged corner in the middle-east of the country , surrounded by the rivers Meta, Guaviare and Orinoco. This region is known for cattle farming, although over the last couple of years, many reforestation projects and tourism initiatives have started to transform this territory. Vichada is a vast region, with few municipalities.Cumaribo is one of them and is the largest of Colombia. 

Despite being far-off, you can access Vichada by a winding unpaved road, if the weather permits. The road starts in Villavicencio, passing through La Primavera, before reaching the capital, Puerto Carreño.  You can also reach  it by plane.

We start our expedition in Puerto Carreño, where the rivers Meta and Orinoco meet. You will have your first contact with pink  and Comerson’s dolphins, an initial taste of this beautiful and exquisite region. 

There are also special fishing trips mainly in the rivers Tomo and Bita, craved by local and international tourists.  Another great experience includes travelling across the unpaved road that leads towards the National Park El Tuparro.  This is a unique and memorable opportunity to explore the river Tuparro that flows into the Orinoco River. 

Vichada’s history has been enriched by the contributions of Alexander Von Humbolt. After his travels, Humboldt described the watercourses of Vichada like one of the wonders of the world. Father Javier de Nicoló, who believes Humbolt was right, has had a great contribution in the region.  He decided this region was ideal to carry a programme to help young people at risk of social exclusion, from Bogotá. Father Javier de Nicoló has created an incredible camp  on the Tambora river bank for this purpose.
